What is "graphic design"? Is a visual tool that combines images, words and
ideas to form physical products in advertisement and
publications. Projects include brochures, posters, flyers, labels, cards, logos, and other print material.
What do graphic designers do? If you really think about it graphic design the way we use it in modern day is pretty new but the artform is actually alot older than most people think. Graphic designers design brochures, newsletters, magazines, posters, cards, labels and much more.
What is a good resource to learn more about Graphic Design? While attending SU we were fortunate to take a history of graphic design course. Our professor had us buy a really interesting book called: "Meggs' History of Graphic Design, 4th edition" written by Philip B. Meggs and Alston W. Purvis. If you are really interested in learning more about the history of graphic design we highly recommend you read this book.
What is "web design"? Is a new media art form that combines words, and images to help inform or interact with a viewer with the use of roll overs, links, sounds, film and etc.
What is "new media"? Is a catch-all term for all forms of electronic communication that have appeared or will appear since the original text-and-static picture forms of online communication. New media usually includes sound, graphics, web, video, animation and anything relating to communicating visually online.
What is flash? Is a type of software that can manipulate vector and raster graphics and supports bidirectional streaming of audio and video. It contains a scripting language called ActionScript. You can use this type of software to create highly animated websites, video and animation. Currently we do not know enough of this software to create websites or short animated video.
What kind of "illustrator" are you? Can you draw realistic images that look like the real thing? Sadly we both did not develop such talent, but we have developed many other talents since studying graphic design. We both can create line drawings and technical images.
What are "Line Drawings"? Is a form of vector image that uses only lines to create a simple drawing.
What are "Technical Drawing"? Is a form of vector image that uses photographs to modify to create a very technical image. It is also known as "high bred image" eccept high bred images try to recreate close to the original image. It is done using computer software.
What are "Vector Images"? Are digital drawings using Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. Some artists collaborate more traditional artforms into images using software to create more traditional looking drawings.
